VANCEBURG — Officials are investigating the cause of a fatal one vehicle accident that occurred Wednesday morning in Lewis County.

According to Lewis County Sheriff Johnny Bivens, the driver who was killed in the accident had been traveling along Kentucky 8 in a black Chevrolet Cobalt.

“The vehicle was heading east on West Kentucky 8, when the vehicle crossed the center line,” Bivens said. “It appears the operator over corrected and crossed the right side (of the road), when (the vehicle) collided with an embankment where the vehicle overturned multiple times and then came to a rest on its top.”

The driver, Deborah Eddington, 52, of Vanceburg, was partially ejected and trapped under the vehicle, Bivens said. Eddington was pronounced dead on the scene by Lewis County Coroner Tony Gaydos.

Officials were notified of the accident at 9:45 Wednesday morning. Bivens surmised that the accident itself could not have happened any earlier than 9:15 a.m.

Although the sheriff’s office is awaiting test results, Bivens said he does not believe there to have been alcohol or any controlled substance involved in the accident. As to what may have caused the incident, Bivens said he is not sure.

“It’s a very rural part of the county,” he said. “We’re talking about the longest straight stretch in the county.”

In addition to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office and Coroner, Lewis County, Black Oak and Garrison Fire Rescue and Portsmouth Ambulance also responded to the incident.
