BROOKSVILLE — Bracken County High School students were given an opportunity to learn about topics related to adulthood on Wednesday.

During the day, seniors could choose four sessions to sit through to learn about finances, vehicles, job interviews, cooking, laundry, First Aid and other topics, according to Assistant Principal Cindy Cummins.

“They’re participating in a program planned by the Bracken County Extension Office,” she said. “It’s important topics they need after high school — skills they don’t learn in high school. They’re rotating through four 30-minute sessions that are presented by extension agents and community volunteers. They can ask questions, participate and watch demonstrations.”

According to Cummins, during the day, the freshmen were working on career planning, the sophomores were taking the ACT and the juniors were on college visits while the seniors were in adulting classes.

Kristin Dalton and Kelsey Hitch discussed the adulting day after leaving the First Aid lesson.

“We were talking to Penny Doyle,” Hitch said. “She’s good at what she does. She’s very informal and goes into details about situations, how you can handle them and how you can help people until EMS or ambulance arrives.”

Dalton said they chose First Aid because it is important.

“It’s important to make sure everyone is safe,” she said. “You’re learning how to do certain things to make sure everyone is safe, so it’s good to learn basic things like CPR and other things to save a life.”

Mason Tucker went to vehicles and job interview skills lessons.

“I wanted to go through the lesson vehicles because I already knew the basic maintenance information, but there were things we learned about if you were broken down on the side of the road, how to jump someone or get your own car jumped, to check your oil and other maintenance.”

Tucker said he learned a great deal of information during the day.

“I learned a lot in interview skills,” he said. “I’ve never had a job or an interview and with graduating high school soon, I was nervous about it. Now, I feel a lot more confident about going into an interview.”

Hitch and Dalton said they enjoyed the lessons.

“It’s been very useful and interesting,” Dalton said.

“We’ve learned a lot of important information,” Hitch added.
