The Mason County School District recently accepted a bid for the Mason County High School Auditorium in downtown Maysville.

According to Mason County Schools Superintendent Rick Ross, JKM Construction submitted a bid in the amount of $280,000. The amount is for the base bid, which includes lights and electrical, but will also allow for additional upgrades.

“We will also be able to enhance the foyer lighting, green room and front of the building,” Ross said. “We are very happy with that bid.”

Earlier in the year, Ross said there were several issues related to the lighting and electric in the auditorium.

“It’s old and a lot needs to be upgraded,” he said. “You can’t even plug in a vacuum without kicking the breaker.”

According to Ross, work is expected to begin after the gala in December and should finish before the Spring musical.

“We should have everything finished by the time the Spring musical is ready,” he said.

The board also approved a bid to replace to HVAC system at Straub Elementary School. That bid was in the amount of $2.5 million from Momentum.

“We had budgeted for $2.7 million,” Ross said. “So, we were pleased with that bid as well.”

Ross said the work on the HVAC system will be more extensive, and will require moving some classes during the work.

“There will be some inconvenience,” he said. “It will involve relocation of classrooms, but when everything is complete, classrooms will have individual access to the system, which they don’t have with the current one.”

The bid also includes replacing the high school boiler and rooftop heating system at the athletic building.

The work on the HVAC system is expected begin soon and to be finished in summer 2019.
