Polly’s Thanksgiving Dinner continues

For 35 years, Polly’s Thanksgiving Dinner has helped families in need by providing warm dinners during the holiday.

This year, the dinner will be held once again on Thanksgiving, which falls on Nov. 22, though at a new location, according to Cindy Trumbo, who heads the dinner each year.

“Back in February 2018, the Rotary Club building was damaged by flood waters. The building could not be repaired by Thanksgiving. Mike Hesler and Judy Clos, Polly Hesler’s children, were offered some new locations to look at. They chose the Maysville Community and Technical Center Culinary Arts Institute in the Cox building.”

The Cox Building is located at the corner of West Third Street and Upper Market Street.

According to Trumbo, on Thanksgiving Day, volunteers will begin prepping food at 4 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., they will begin to serve meals.

Anyone interested in donating desserts should call Cindy Trumbo at 937-217-0121.

“We do not make desserts. If you would like to donate, it would be greatly appreciated,” she said.

Anyone who would like dinners to be delivered to them should call 606-584-6994 or 606-584-0355.

“Please only call on Thanksgiving for deliveries,” Trumbo said. “We don’t want to risk losing anyone’s address.”

Trumbo said 740 people were served in 2017.

“We’ve been doing this for 35 years,” she said. “When we began, we were in a small church and served about 50 people. In 35 years, we’ve gone from 50 to 740 people served. We’ve even had upwards of 800 people. One year, there were almost 1,000 people served.”

Polly’s Thanksgiving Dinner was started by Polly Hesler 35 years ago.

She began providing a free community Thanksgiving dinner before her restaurant, Polly’s Restaurant, closed and for years after, with the helping hands of volunteers and donations of everything from potatoes to pies.

“Polly Hesler, my mom, died from cancer in 2010. She was there to call the shots every year,” Trumbo said. “I just wanted to tell mom, ‘We’re still at it!’”

If you would like to make donations, please mail them to The Rotary Club, PO Box 322, Maysville, Ky. 41056.
