Culinary arts students at Mason County High School are selling fresh meals.

According to MCHS family and consumer science teacher Shannon Roberts, her students are selling food as a fund-raiser for culinary arts-related field trips by preparing fresh meals that can be cooked at home.

The meals will include enchilada casserole, tortilla chips with homemade pico de gallo and coffee cookie brownies. The cost for the meals is $35.

“They’re preparing meals to sell to the public,” she said. “Anyone who wants it can order it through the online form or by calling me. They can pick them up on Thursday after school, take the food home and just put it in the oven.”

Roberts said the deadline to order to food is Monday at midnight.

“It takes about two days for my students to prepare the food,” she said. “They’re working hard on it. The money will be used for their field trips, where they learn more about culinary arts and cooking.”

Erin Hasler, a junior at MCHS, said she enjoys preparing the meals because it helps to teach her more about cooking.

“At my house, we don’t do a lot of cooking,” she said. “I’m learning more by doing this and I’m enjoying it.”

According to Hasler, students will write notes on the boxes to thank individuals who purchase it and they will add directions on how to cook it once the meal has been taken home.

“We prepare the food at school, layer everything and put the foil on top of it,” she said. “Then, we put cute little notes on it and the directions to bake. It’s really exciting. I’m getting a lot of experience.”

Meals can also be purchased by calling 606-584-0347.

“The meals can be picked up after school on Thursday,” she said. “Pull around behind the school, toward the football field and I’ll have my door open. I usually put up signs to show people where to go. Payment can be made at pickup.”
