Mason County High School student Kaylee Campbell has received the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children 2018 Yes I Can award for school and community activities.

Campbell was nominated for the award by Mason County Schools Director of Special Needs Greta Stanfield.

Stanfield said she nominated Campbell because of her tremendous attitude and involvement in activities throughout Mason County.

“She’s just amazing,” Stanfield said. “She won my heart from the first time I met her. She’s involved in several activities and in the work transition program. To see a child hit all of her obstacles on a daily basis and overcoming, is just inspiring. She teaches adults how to be happy and overcome their own obstacles.”

According to Stanfield, Campbell is involved in Future Farmers of America, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, cross country track and she currently works at Tumbleweed.

Campbell was notified about receiving the award last week and will receive the actual award in November at a ceremony.

Stanfield said she was excited when she found out Campbell had received the award.

“I couldn’t wait to tell everyone when I found out,” she said. “I wanted to tell Kaylee and her mom and the whole school district. You look at her accomplishments and you just know she deserves this. There are a lot of children who are involved, but to be as involved as Kaylee and also have to fight through the medical issues she fights through everyday, is amazing and inspiring. She’s such a blessing.”

In order to be nominated for the award, a video about Campbell and an application describing her involvement had to be sent in.

A reception for Campbell will be held at the school district at a later date.

Campbell said she was also excited to know she received the award.

“They sent in a video about me — that was where it started,” she said. “I was really excited when I found out that I had won. I’m so happy.”

Campbell’s mother, Melissa Campbell said she was also happy for her daughter.

“We were very excited,” she said. “She pushes herself everyday to keep going and she’s overcome so much. She deserves it. She’s such a social butterfly.”
