BROOKSVILLE — The Bracken County School District is requesting an emergency order to replace an air conditioning unit in the middle school.

According to Bracken County Superintendent Jeff Aulick, the A/C unit in the Bracken County Middle School building is a 1987 model and only works about 50 percent of the time.

“It’s currently running at 50 percent,” he said. “It’s not fantastic, but it’s better than it could be without it. We’ve applied for an emergency order through the state, so we can move forward with replacing the unit faster than we would be able to normally.”

Aulick said he believes the unit will cost somewhere around $60,000 to $100,000, but he is hoping to keep the costs around $80,000.

“The funding will come from our facilities budget,” he said.

According to Aulick, a new unit is expected to have an annual energy savings of about $9,000.

“With that savings, in 10 years, it would pay itself off,” he said.

The district also recently approved tax rates for the 2018-2019 school year.

The district took the compensating rate at 39.8 cents per $100 of assessed property value, according to Aulick.

The rate last year was 39.9 cents and generated $1.74 million. If collected at 100 percent, the current year’s rate would generate $1.8 million.

The 2018-19 fiscal year working budget was also approved recently.

The budget includes a revenue of $9.7 million for the general fund, $111,472 for the capital outlay fund, $1.86 million for the building fund, $240,473 for the debt service fund, and $994,415 for the food service fund for a total of $14 million.
