Maysville Fire Chief Kevin Doyle offered a few tips to make sure sure a water heater is working properly.

— Make sure pressure relief valves are functioning properly. Valves should be tested about twice a year. If sediment builds up and the valve does not open, call a plumber to replace the valve.

— Check wiring on the heater and make sure that every wire is connected properly and beneath the shield panels.

— If a new water heater is being installed, make sure it is installed by a professional.
