A Donors Choose campaign is underway to raise money for equipment to assist Straub Elementary School students with phonics skills.

Cindy Lands, a teacher at Straub, is attempting to raise $424 to purchase phonics locks sets, fill in the blank stamps and reading skill dice that will assist her students with phonics.

“I teach first grade special education,” Lands said. “The supplies I have asked for are manipulatives that the kids can use to reinforce their learning. It gives them another way to practice. Teaching special education, we try to teach in a multi-sensory approach and the materials allow me to create learning experiences that reach multiple learning types.”

Lands believes the materials will assist her students to overcome any obstacle standing in their way.

“Each item requested can be used in multiple ways to expand learning each day. My students will use the dice, ten-frames board and number grid in whole group, small groups and during center time to master the skills that they need to be successful in the resource room and the regular education classroom,” she said. “My students love to learn and will enjoy using the materials to explore new concepts and learning targets in the resource room.”

According to Lands, the deadline for the fundraiser is not until December, but the sooner she can purchase the equipment, the better.

“I could use the materials as soon as possible,” she said.

Lands also said the school does provide materials for her students.

“The school provides me with learning materials for my students,” she said. “It’s just that after more than 12 years and moving to first grade, I needed higher level materials. My students are best when they are given the opportunity to manipulate materials that reinforce learning.”
