VANCEBURG — A brief, but frantic vehicle pursuit ended in the arrest of an Ohio man in Lewis County by the sheriff’s department.

Lewis County Sheriff Johnny Bivens and Deputy Matt Ross were dispatched to Kentucky 9 AA Highway near Garrison Thursday afternoon in regards to a stolen vehicle. According to Bivens, the dispatchers advised that a black Dodge Charger had been travelling along the AA Highway and was apparently stolen from Greenup County.

Bivens and Ross caught up with the vehicle as it turned off from the AA Highway onto Montgomery Road. Upon observation, it was discovered one of the wheels on the reportedly stolen vehicle was missing, causing a potentially dangerous situation.

“Upon activating the emergency equipment the operator accelerated and continued south on Montgomery Road,” Bivens said.

The vehicle then suddenly stopped and Bivens said the driver appeared to be exiting the vehicle; the driver’s door then closed and the vehicle began traveling backwards, eventually hitting Bivens’ cruiser.

In an effort to disable the vehicle, Bivens decided to attempt pushing the vehicle off of the roadway. Bivens was successful in moving the vehicle off of the right side of the road, where the male driver soon exited the vehicle.

When Ross confronted the driver, identified as Terry Reed II, 31, from West Portsmouth, Ohio, Reed attempted to attack Ross, though Ross was able to neutralize Reed and handcuff him, according to the officer.

“(Reed) stated several times that he had a gun and was asking to be shot by deputies but no firearm was located,” Bivens said.

Reed was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property over $10,000, two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree fleeing an evading police, first-degree criminal mischief and resisting arrest. Reed was lodged in the Lewis County Detention Center, where he remains.

Bivens said additional charges will be filed out of Greenup County along with Lewis County.
