BROOKSVILLE — Bracken County Fiscal Court members approved $10,000 in financial assistance to the Brooksville Volunteer Fire Department for the purchase of a new fire truck.

A representative with the fire department was at fiscal court on Wednesday to discuss the need for a new truck.

“In the past, we have helped the fire departments with new equipment,” Bracken County Judge-Executive Earl Bush said.

According to the Brooksville VFD representative Jeff Perkins, the department is replacing a 1985 Chevrolet tanker with a 2002 Freightliner.

“It’s a 2,000 gallon stainless steel tank,” he said. “Right now, what we have is an old tank like they used to use back on the farms. We’re trying to update; get away from an older truck and get a newer truck, because it’s not up to the standards for what you’re supposed to have. There isn’t currently a fine for not being up to standards, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they started one.”

Perkins said the new truck only has about 6,000 miles.

He said the department is not asking for a specific amount of money.

“Just anything you can do to help us,” he said. “This truck we are looking at will be the exact same type of truck we have now except it will be stainless steel.”

Bush said he was in favor of assisting the fire department, because the county has assisted the fire departments in the past.

“We appreciate everything the fire departments do for the county,” he said.

Magistrates approved $10,000 for the department.

During the meeting, Bush also said roadwork is still be completing in some areas of the county.

“We’re making progress on the slips on Old Kentucky 19,” he said. “We’re on the last area that we’ll be doing at this time. These slips have been a real issue over time.”

Other items discussed at the meeting included:

— An announcement about a possible new business in Augusta called Augusta Sweet Water. The company will be a distillery, museum and gift shop housed in the F.A Neider building.

— Learned the Augusta Riverfest Regatta will be July 13-14.

— Approved end of year transfers.

— Approved claims.
