Scouting out holiday treats
I was recently invited to a Christmas party at the home of Michele Traxel and her daughter, Regan. Scout Troop No. 152 met and was getting ready for the holidays. This was an evening of fun and excitement. The girls and their moms had already sent me their holiday recipes and I couldn't wait to see the finished products. The girls varied in age but were so grown up, they had lots of giggles and they were delightful! What a nice evening to share.

I am so very excited this week to feature a chef who has ties to Maysville and Augusta. A few weeks ago, Elizabeth Sapp, of Maysville, brought me a delightful cookbook from her grandson, Nate Appleman. Nate, is the son of Connie Sapp Callahan, formerly of Maysville, who resides in Texas and Dr. James Appleman of Greenville, Ohio. He is also the grandson of the late James Sapp and the late, Mr. and Mrs. James Appleman.

Early Morning Business Meeting Goodies
I was recently invited to a meeting held at the new Fleming County Hospital where a group gathered to learn about the function of the Women's Crisis Center. As part of my food column I want to feature foods for an early morning business meeting and also increase awareness of some services in our area. The Maysville facility has a crisis team in place and now they will be sharing their ideas and information so that Fleming County can be a part of this service. The outcome of this meeting was to set protocol for developing a Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) in Fleming County.

Kabler's Chatter...A luncheon with Ohio Valley Personnel Association
The Ohio Valley Personnel Association is the local organization for human resource and related professionals in the Ohio Valley area. They meet on the second Wednesday every other month to discuss topics related to human resources and to share ideas and network. Shari Stafford and Barbara Campbell are co-chairs this year and Kay Moss is the treasurer. The group has been in operation over 25 years.

Recently I was invited to attend a committee meeting for the Maysville Younger Woman's Club while they were in the planning and preparation stage of the upcoming charity ball. Since the theme this year is "A Night at Sea," each committee member brought a delicious appetizer or homemade chowder to the meeting. All recipes were beautifully displayed and delicious to eat. Every recipe contained some type of seafood. These recipes I will share with you today.

Fleming feast
The Fleming Co. Garden Club was organized in 1933 with Mrs. E.B.Bourland the first president. The "ladies" attended meetings with their hats and white gloves. Today the meetings are more casual and very involved in community activities. Recently the annual picnic was held at the at the beautiful home of Steven and Linda Donovan at Cedar Lake.

September is National Chicken Month. Some people think of chicken as boring but I think of it as low calorie and easy to prepare. Chicken is right at the top of my list for the most versatile food you can prepare. Grocers and chicken producers, for the last 18 years, have promoted chicken and partnered with other new brands of food which compliment chicken. Magazines are full of great recipes to try using lots of chicken.

Onions: Nothing to cry about
The entire time I am slicing onions and shedding a few tears, I just try to remember how great these are going to be in the recipe I am preparing. As onions are sliced, cells are broken and enzymes break down causing a gas to diffuse through the air and this eventually reaches the eyes.

Kabler's Chatter...One versatile fruit
Bell peppers are fruits in different colors, red, yellow, green and orange. They are usually thought of as vegetables, since they are not juicy or real sweet like most fruits. They are versatile and delicious in so many recipes that I purchase them weekly, year around. Bell peppers are not hot, they are easily prepared for cooking and have a great taste, cooked or raw. I really like using them in recipes, almost for their color. They are usually 2-5 inches in diameter and 3 inches long.

Kabler's Chatter...No leaving the table until you finish your brussel sprouts
I hope to make you comfortable with cooking Brussels sprouts by giving you a variety of recipes. Gardens are now bountiful and some local gardeners are growing Brussels sprouts. This is a great low calorie, fiber food to include in your menus. Our favorite preparation is sliced, sauteed in a little margarine, sprinkled with balsamic vinegar and brown sugar. Brussels sprouts are easy to prepare and cook rather quickly. They are somewhat bitter, so a little brown sugar can make them delicious.
