Following a season opening win over Paris, Mason County assumed the fifth spot among Class 3A schools in the season's first Kentucky Associated Press high school football poll on Tuesday.

The ranking was similar to what was expected for the Royals, who were fifth among 3A schools in a preseason coaches poll by the Lexington Herald Leader and fourth in the Bluegrass Preps preseason rankings. Belfry received nine first place votes and holds the top spot in Class 3A, followed by Louisville Central, which received four first place votes. Fellow District 7 foe Russell holds the third spot after opening with a 49-13 win over Greenup County.

Mason County was the only local team to win in the season's first week and the only local team to appear in the poll. The Royals' opponent this week, Boone County, was voted 11th in Class 6A despite opening the season with a 23-14 loss at Scott County. Harrison County, which defeated Fleming County 48-35 on Saturday, debuts at the eight spot in Class 4A.
