Support Relay for Life

The Mason County Relay For Life will be held tonight, and we encourage everyone to participate either by attending the event or contributing to this worthy cause.

Cancer -- in its many forms -- has affected the lives of millions and there is not a single family in this area that has not been affected either directly or indirectly by the disease. Child, parent, friend, loved one -- cancer seems to cross all the racial, income, religious and social boundaries. We mourn for those who lost their fight against the deadly killer, and we celebrate the lives of the survivors who have fought and continue to fight.

The battle to identify, treat and ultimately to cure cancer has been an ongoing, expensive and frustrating effort. Huge strides have been made since the days when a cancer diagnosis was a death sentence in virtually every case. New procedures and new drugs are giving life and hope to many. New diagnostic tests and screenings are finding cancer in its earliest stages when the chances for a good outcome are best.

But the bottom line is that this battle is not won and the expense of finding the new treatments and drugs must be borne by all of us.

The Relay for Life is an opportunity, on a local level, to participate in the ongoing and never ending struggle against this heartbreaking disease. Beginning at 7 p.m. at the Mason County Rec Park, the Mason County Relay for Life will include lots of fun and some serious moments as well. The luminary service at 10 p.m. is a particularly poignant reminder that cancer has had a huge impact on people and families of our area. If you have never attended one of these luminary services, we strongly urge you to be on hand for this one.

Doctors, scientists and researchers -- not to mention the patients themselves -- have proved to us that cancer is a beatable disease and that a victory is possible. The Relay for Life is your opportunity to share in that victory.
